30 Hour Famine Fundraising SHOUT OUT!

I’m putting this on my political page because I want to make a shout out. To politically left-leaning types: we can’t let children starve! To right-wingers–prove to the lefties that charity is not dead! To libertarians: the same! As many of my left-leaning friends often say to me, “we are all in this together.” So let’s help out. My friend Kurt is going all out to make this happen. Please donate! Here is the link:

http://twv.convio.net/site/TR/30HourFamine/30HourFamine?px=1144096&pg=personal&fr_id=1310

From the page:

During this event we go without food for 30 hours and do community service project that help raise awareness for and help local and world hunger relief efforts. What this event teaches me each year is how each of us can make a big impact if our efforts come together through an organization like World Vision. Over the past 16 years I have read the depressing statistics such as ‘a child dies from hunger every 10 seconds’ … but looking back I realise that it used to read ‘every 3 seconds’!

From the time it took for you to read this, many children have already died of hunger, according to Kurt’s quoted statistics. Starvation is brought about because of government interference in the free market. So since we have to put up with thugs stealing energy from productive people and putting them into poverty, enlightened people like you and I have to take up the slack. And, since the time interval has increased from 3 seconds to 10 seconds, that means we are making a difference!

So what are you waiting for? Click the link and pledge! Thanks!

How to Survive the Coming Economic Crash – Freedomain Radio Interviews Woody O’Brien

Watch until the end. There is an excellent message of hope that I think we should all embrace. We’ll get through this–a post-collapse society will be a much more stable place to live.

Is Government Immoral?

We have to violate rights in order to protect them

We have to violate rights in order to protect them

I lifted this from a conversation I was having with some friends on the subject of gun control and populace safety. I was asked some key questions about rights, and was told that rights at times must be sacrificed for the “greater good.” Specifically in this case the right to own a gun gets trumped by the “right” to be safe. I attempted to answer their questions by showing that the notion of government is immoral. I think I lay out the ground work pretty well, so I’ve posted it here for your reading pleasure. Comments welcome.

Okay, since I’m getting the idea that you think we cannot have a peaceful society without a government, let’s start with the notion of government. It seems that the prevalent notion is that “we-the-people” created government, and that it works for us–we’re the bosses. We vote to create and mold government to suit us. Government prescribes the laws and decides what a right is and what it isn’t and therefore decides what a crime is and what it isn’t. So we can say the government is created by the consent of the governed. Supposedly, they have our consent.

But the truth is, they don’t work for us–we work for them. In fact, we are really their slaves. Let’s walk through this.

Marc Stevens: The State Does not Exist

Best quote aimed at political conservatives who complain about socialism: “If you have a problem with socialized medicine, you should also have a problem with college football.”

Marc takes apart the concept of the state, and proves that it does not exist.

Why I Have Stopped Voting

A friend of mine told me that if I don’t vote, then I don’t have the right to complain about the things the government does. In fact, she went as far to tell me that she would’t even listen to anything I say on the subject.

Maybe that’s a good thing. Because then I can stop trying to reach her. It’s a lot of effort on my part–it’s exhausting banging your head against a solid rock of pig-headed stubbornness :) .

I stopped voting because I believe that a vote in any political election  is an affirmation the system is valid and that you think how our government extracts wealth from people is a-okay. That violence employed against peaceful people who have harmed no one is the best way to treat people. That it is okay for one group of people to control another peaceful group of people.

Living in anarchy–now!

I had an interesting political discussion with some left-leaning friends on Facebook about the upcoming elections in California. They were going on about the dismal choices of candidates. The consensus was to choose the lesser of two evils. However one friend remarked that she wasn’t sure which was worse than the other, so it was difficult to finger that lesser quality.

My input was that I was not going to vote in this election at all, maintaining that if one votes for the lesser of two evils, one is still voting for evil. No one could refute that argument, and in fact they pretty much agreed. However, another of my friends said, “if you don’t vote, you get anarchy.”

Now this is an interesting conclusion. Most people equate anarchy with chaos–warlords running around with machine guns and death and destruction. No wonder most people run away at the mention of anarchy.

What do we replace government with?

Whenever I mention to anyone that I think government should be abolished so we can be truly free, I usually get a response something akin to questions like the following:

  1. Who will defend our borders?
  2. Who will provide police and fire protection?
  3. What about the roads? Who will make roads available?
  4. What about education? Social security? Health care? Welfare?

The Elephant in the Room

When I bring up the fact that the social state is a system built upon violence against its own citizens, it’s amazing the reactions I get from average people. One of my friends told me tax evaders and people who resist arrest are not patriotic. When the state gives a command, it is your duty to follow it without question. And if you don’t like it, write to your congressman! I believe that by classifying the people who question the authority of the state as “extremists,” we don’t have to face the cold and ugly truth about the so-called benevolent state.

Some dissenters would label my friend mentioned above as a “statist” or “state apologist.” I don’t like labels; they just divide people. I think of people like my friend as just, well, people who went to the same state-run schools as I did. Of course the state is going to teach all of us that it is benevolent and ours is the freest society in the world (maybe it is, but it looks less so with each passing day). It’s in the state’s best interest.
